Huge Update - Hi Mom!

Vietnam

Time has been flying by on this trip. I haven’t even had time to relax, send emails really, or even do schoolwork haha. Ive been to Vietnam and China and today I am a day outside of Japan. Its so unreal that I have been to all of these places, South Africa seems like years ago when really it was only a month or something like that.

So here is an update on what was Vietnam.

First day in Vietnam was spend traveling around Ho Chi Mihn City. We rented out a couple of rickshas, which are these guys on bikes with seats on the bike for someone to sit in. These things ended up being a total rip off because they way overcharged at the end and that turned into a verbal argument between me, Rob and Mark vs these three little Vietnamese men haha. I think they were intimidated big time because we paid what we wanted..not what they wanted. We went to a Vietnam war museum which totally pissed me off. It was just bashing the US with this propaganda bs about how we tortured all of their people and they were total victims, which is an absolute lie. Enough of that though haha

That night we hopped on an overnight bus to Nha Trang which is a small little beach town about 8 hours away. This overnight bus was absurd. Imagine 5 car seats stuck together in a row laying down with a 2 foot ceiling right over your head. The most uncomfortable thing I have ever traveled on. Nha Trang was very relaxing. We spend a day at the hot springs spa type thing, which was a total tourist trap..luckily it was only 5 bucks. It wasn’t even natural hot springs, they just filtered the water into these baths. It sucked. We first had to take a mud bath, then shower, then take a hot spring bath. Mind you I was with 2 other dudes, probably the gayest thing I have ever done. The nightlife there was a total backpacker enviorment. Super cheap beers everywhere and these very small overpacked pool bars, it was a really cool scene. I had never really scene the backpacker scene before. Just so many people brought together from so many countries.

Next day was spent snorkeling on a fishing boat haha. Not the nicest of boats but I did snorkel, I saw coral, and I got to jump off of these tall boats. We also went to a private beach that was really beautiful. I think that this place is going to jump off with tourists because they seem like they are building by the billions of dollars. New hotels and resorts on every island. Keep a look out for Vietnam, the new vacation capital haha.

We then took the same 8 hour bus back but during the day, then spend the next 2 days back in Ho Chi Mihn City. The city was great, everyone very helpful and nice. I was very pleasantly surprised. Overall very happy with the country and my time there, I mean I probably wont be going back ever but Im glad I was there once.

Now onto China

Ok so this going to be a HUGE blog, Ive procrastinated doing this for such a long time and its just building and building up. Ive been through a lot of countries in the past month. China, Japan, Hawaii, and now I have Guatemala in 2 days. Also finals are going on so its been a packed packed month. So here we go

China
I started off China in Hong Kong – while I was there it was the biggest rugby tournament in the world, it was called the Rugby 7’s. I only had 1 night in Hong Kong, but it made a huge positive impression on me. It was a beautiful city at night with an unbelievably colorful skyline. Every night in Hong Kong the skyscrapers have a light show with lasers and the building had lights all over them. It was very impressive. After that I headed towards the Great Wall.

It was only on the way to the Great Wall that I realized how communist of a country China is. It seemed like people didn’t even have personalities. The government controls everything in China, phones, tv, and internet. There is no source of information that is not scanned beforehand by the government. Beijing was also a very impressive city. Very well established buildings, but not as huge of a skyline. I went to the Forbidden City, old Beijing, and The Temple of Heaven during my time in Beijing. They were like palaces and religious monuments that were built during the ancient times of China. They were cool at first but eventually got super repetitive so by that time I was ready for the Great Wall.

The Great Wall was totally enormous. It just kept going on and on, as far as the eye could see literally. The pictures that I got are unreal because you can just see the wall wind and flow through the mountains for what seems like forever. I never thought that I would get to a place like that in my life so it was almost a surreal feeling being there. I mean Ive read about it countless times but to actually be there was unbelievable, it was very comparable to the Taj Mahal. I would put them both on the same level of architectural greatness that I have seen on this trip.

Japan

Places don’t get more fun than Japan. I have come to the realization that I am a city dweller at heart. Tokyo was pack to the brim with people, I honestly believe 1,000 more people and that place is just gonna explode. When work got out at 5 the streets were mobbed. Barely anyone drives because there are people everyone and the train system is sooo high teck and easy to use. I rode it basically every day there to go shopping, eat, drink, sleep.

Obviously I did karaoke one night and naturally I had the mic for a few songs and yes I was absolutely terrible. It was so fun, we rented out a private room with unlimited beers and our own sound system overlooking the city streets. Now if that’s not Japanese culture I don’t know what is. But just like every other country there is always a misinformed part about the bill. I am pretty sure we paid way too much for that little karaoke event but whatever it was worth it.

Best part of my entire trip right here – right outside of our hotel window, which was one of the tallest buildings in the are, we could see a soccer field on the rooftop of the building next to us. The Adidas Futsol park. Adidas has built this futsol park right on top of this building. Luckily two of my best friends are soccer players like me and we headed over there one day. These locals were so nice, they got us dressed up in this sick adidas gear, shirt, shorts, socks, shoes, whole 9 yards for like 5 bucks. They didn’t even charge us for the field. We got to play against the locals anddddddd we got smoked. They were unreal, their footskills were nothing like I have ever seen. I want these fellas on my Framingham State team, and this goes to my fellow Rams, I know where that Japanese kid from Salem got his skills from, im pretty sure these dudes were much better than him. That good.

Sushi – unreal – I actually stayed in one of the largest fishing areas in all of Japan, fresh fish coming in every day. I went to a rotating sushi bar every day, $1.30 a plate and it was all you can eat. It was a dream come true and I know my mom is going to be jealous when she reads this haha. Mom you better get to making your own! Haha and Mom you need to get to Japan to try this sushi, its worth it..100%

I didn’t spend my entire time in Japan though, we went to the old capitol city to see the China Blossoms which luckily happen to be blooming right when we were visiting and we also got to see the ancient Japanese architecture. It was great to see where Japan came from then see where it has gone aka Tokyo.

All in all Im pretty sure Tokyo takes the cake for best place on the trip – better than Bangkok. It just had so much going on and they are soo good are working their systematic day to day life. I wouldn’t mind teaching English there for a year or something after college, that’s just a dream though, I don’t know if im ready for that yet haha. Maybe with a solid girl or a best buddy I could, but no way on my own, that would be overwhelming.

Hawaii
Short and Sweet to say the least – I got to surf which was awesome, I did better than expected but nothing special. The locals were kind of dicks to us newbie surfers but I knew it was going to be like that before I got there, they are a territorial breed I guess. But my friend Amelia who is from there, she is on the boat, was nothing short of amazing to us. She opened her house for all of us to stay there, it was a house with a pool, directly on the beach. Then we had a keg party for her birthday that night, so that was a lot of fun.

I attempted to sky dive but my jump got cancelled – big bummer. I guess the wind was serious and some dude broke his back on the landing a little while before. I decided not to go back and try it out because I still wanted to surf. Ill do it one day, maybe in Vegas for my birthday celebrating it over winter break…wink wink Mimi and Gino haha

Sorry for the serious delay on this blog but its been a busy time. The trip is winding down so ive been studying a little bit but enjoying the rays and boat life just a little bit more haha.

Miss everyone back home and I cant wait to see my family and friends real soon!

Until next time

Thailand

Thailand

Bangkok Thailand could be my favorite place in the world. This city has it all, culture, food, drink, partying…there is nothing that this place can’t offer you. The first day was spent outside of Bangkok at the Sri Racha Tiger Zoo. This was for my Zoology class Field Study. I would describe it as an under-funded Disney Zoo. The main attractions were tigers, elephants, and alligators. All of these animals were clearly abused and were tranquilized out of their minds, it was pretty sad. At one point during the alligator show the trainer guy shoved his entire arm down the throat of an alligator and it didn’t move one inch. This was clearly because the alligator was closer to death than life because of all of the drugs it was on. The elephants were clearly abused out of their skulls so that they grow up being afraid of humans. They were being lead around the park picking people up with their trunks, which I did and it was sweet, but they were being controlled by a guy with like a sharp pick that he would just stab the elephant with constantly. Then I saw tigers jump through fire hoops and all that. I guess the tigers are raised at this place feeding from a pig, so they grow up thinking that they are a pig…weird I know. This place wasn’t the best part of the trip but I have read about animal abuse in Thailand before and now I got to see it firsthand.

Bangkok….

I all of my time in Bangkok and I am so happy that I did. This city was my dream, I will make another visit. I don’t know when, and I’m not sure for how long, but I will be back. Everybody in the city was so helpful in providing information on where to eat, how to get there, how much we should pay..the whole 9 yards. I spent most of my time during the day just city dwelling, hitting up markets, and eating the local food, basically exactly what I wanted to do. No agenda, no time to be anywhere, just enjoying the city life and diving head first into the culture. I had lunch at street side family restaurants and ate the local food that everyday people eat. My group that I was with and I basically refused to be treated like tourists, we wanted to be a part of that city instead of just a visitor. We spent one day traveling on a boat shuttle to the Grand Palace, it is all of these religious buildings that are made out of gold and jewels. It was just a complete tourist spot but we had to see it and I am glad I did, plus the pictures I took there are pretty sweet. I also stopped by a Muy Thai match and saw an American female fighter just beat the crap of a Thai fighter, it was the most lopsided fight I have ever seen, regardless I was glad to see the US come out on top haha

The nightlife in Bangkok was just unreal... The nightlife consisted of bar hopping and going to clubs. There nightlife was just street after street of bars that were covered with small markets and the most delicious street food I have ever had. We would stop at 7 11’s and get a few beers to walk around and drink then head into a bar and have some more drinks. Most places had live Thai bands and all of the people there loved Americans and they would buy us drinks and ask about our travels, they made you feel right at home. One night I decided to get real in depth with the culture and had myself some fried bugs from a vender. I ate a scorpion, a few crickets, and an assortment of small little critters, they tasted pretty bland, but super crunchy, especially the scorpion which was probably 3-4 inches long, I would eat them again haha, probably just for the laugh. Just stay clear of the Go-Go Bars, because that’s where all of the creepy old white men hang out, I don’t feel like I need to say more, it is Thailand after all.

Vietnam in a 2 days and that means only 2 days of classes haha, once again life is tougggghhhh

India…bring your dirty clothes

India has it places to see, and places where these Indian people really need to get their act together.

With that as a start I will explain the good first, and then move onto the ugly.

Delhi was a great place, very modern and clean. This is where the Taj Mahal is, and it is more beautiful and magnificent than I could have ever expected. The symmetry of this place was unreal. Everything is perfectly aligned and it all flows so well. Not to mention the entire place is made out of marble that shimmers and reflects into different shades and colors as the sun changes its position in the sky. There are ponds everywhere that reflect the image on the Taj, the pictures I got are unreal. I wish that everyone could see it through their own eyes. When I first entered into the complex where the Taj is I got goosebumps, that is how unreal it is. I made a valiant attempt to get a picture at the Taj Mahal with my Nicks Roast Beef bumper sticker, but right when I pulled it out and got in my pose for the picture it was taken right away from me from the security guards. I guess it is a legit crime to have signs and stuff like that inside of the Taj Mahal grounds. But they didn’t say one word about Anthony’s teddy bear that I took millions of pictures with. He is going to love them.
Anthony – I got your bear a new necklace and I traded his old one to a little kid for a taj mahal snow globe key chain haha, its around his arm now. All of the little begger kids wanted that bear so bad, it was pretty funny, they wanted to trade for it and they were all asking me how much I spent on it.

So before I went to the Taj Mahal, I spent 2 days in Varanasi. This place really needs to get its act together. This “holy” river was a complete mess. The Ganges River was really polluted, people were washing their clothes in one part, drinking the water in another, swimming in another, and then at the end burning their deceased relatives and putting the burning body into the river. Not to mention that there was trash everywhere, I don’t know about them but I know that we Greeks treat holy things and staples in our religion with much more respect. Maybe I was just a little culture shocked, but this place was basically back in time. The city of Varanasi itself was totally underdeveloped. Inside of the city there are thousands maybe millions of beggers and homeless. Many of these people born with deformities or became deformed because when they were young their parents purposefully deformed them so they would be a more effective begger. YEAH THAT IS 100 PERCENT TRUE. It is almost as if the price of life in India was very small. I mean if you are willing to deform your child at birth, you clearly do not care whether they live or die on the street. There were more guys on bikes offering rides with a buggy attached than there were cars. It was fun to take one for a day, but to live that day to day is just way over my head. Varanasi also has farm animals everywhere, not tied up or anything, just free roaming as they please. This speaks so much louder than just the visual look of it. It is basically saying that these people, since they can live directly with animals are basically living like animals. Cows in stores, poopin in the streets, and then people will just walk on by like its cool. The pictures I took are just insane. I think the population of Varanasi is around the tens of millions, so its also so packed, add that great BO smell and the cow smell, and the trash, you get quite the attractive stench!

As you can see I got the opportunity to see both sides of India. I saw the beautiful and the straight up hideous. Im sorry for being so blunt and maybe a little too harsh, but I had to update this post quickly as it was fresh in my mind and this was post is exactly how I felt at the time. I really cannot see myself ever making a trip back to India, its sad to say that because it’s the first place on my trip that I truly feel that way and I had higher expectations for a timeless country like India.

Next stop is Thailand in 5 days
Talk to you laterrr

Yes we can..Speak African

Namibia – better than expected. At first I was unsure to as how much excitement it could offer, but it was unreal. A group of us rented out a beach house and had an awesome view of the sunset every night. During the first day I headed into the sand dunes and listened to a performance where music was made with the sand….yeahhh it was very interesting. But it was cool because I got to see the largest sand dune in the world named Dune 7 and I also got to climb to the top of a few others and take some incredible pictures.

During another day me and few other broskis went 4 wheeling in the desert. It was one of the most incredible things I have ever done. We would be going full speed 6th gear up these dunes and then fishtalling up at the top and fly back down. We were legit 4 wheeling out in the middle of nowhere. I couldn’t see anything for miles and miles. Some chick flipped her 4 wheeler over, and I laughed in her face because she deserved it, she was screwing around and almost got hurt like a complete moron.

At night there was a cool local bar scene where a lot of the semester at sea kids went to and we also ate at some great restaurants. I would say that Namibia was overall better than I expected but my next post about Cape Town straight up blew every other country out of the water.

Cape Town

Our boat was parked right in the heart of Cape Town at the V&A Waterfront. This place has everything, restaurants, pubs, a mall, tourist agencies..the whole 9 yards. This place was so sick that everyone stayed on the boat at the end of every night because it was like our boat was a 5 star hotel in the best part of the town.

First day we got to the top of Table Mountain, which is highest mountain in South Africa, it was overcast so we were like in the clouds, but it was still cool. Then at the top we absailed down, this is basically repelling down this shear rock cliff on the outside edge of the mountain. It is the longest absail in the world. I was legit scared at one point when the mountain in front of you is all of a sudden gone and you are just repelling with the rope, no rock in front of you, it was a very unnatural feeling for sure.

Next day I spent the on one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Clifton Beach. It was a great day because it gave me and my 2 buddies that I was with, Mark from UNH and Matt from Penn State, time to reflect and really appreciate what we were doing on this trip. We had a great day not worrying about time or an agenda. I really took a step back that day and it hit me for the first time that home is not a train ride away anymore, but I am legit across the Atlantic, not close to home.

Third day was animal day. I went to a Nature Reserve and saw the “Big Five”, elephants, lions, water buffalo, leopard, and rhino. I didn’t get to see a leopard, but instead cheetahs and giraffes. It was great and I got awesome pictures, but animals do not really intrigue me all that much, they just don’t hit the spot that physical excursions do for me. I guess I am more of a do-er than a watcher. Most people loved it and I can see why, but ehhh I wouldn’t have cried if I didn’t see animals. Oh but there was a hilarious part when we saw the rhinos, one turned its butt right to us and laid a huge fart, that was hilarious.

Fourth day was the wine tour day in a town nearby to Cape Town, Stellenbosch. What a town this was, it was gorgeous. The university there was unreal also, I think I would like to do my graduate school there, even though its in a different language haha. A group of us got a wine tour that took us to 2 vineyards with wine tasting and cheese. We also got to see the making of the wine which was cool. I think owning a vineyard would be a saweeeet thing to own one day. How could that not be cool?? I have definitely have this new appreciation for a fine wine…and cheese, the cheese in South Africa was awesome. Naturally we all got a little “loose” with all of that wine in us, so on the ride home I had to do a little comedy in the van we were in. Our driver had a microphone to give us a tour and we could all hear him. I decided to get the microphone and do a little standup/beatbox/rap. I had the van laughing as I would poke fun at our inside jokes we have developed. Everyone found it pretty funny, and I always enjoy making my friends laugh and have a good time. It was a good end to the day before we hit up dinner. We had dinner in this place inside of the trees. You could eat in a treehouse, but our group was too large. I ate some water buffalo, zebra, and I think maybe some ostrich? Zebra was very good, water buffalo ehhhh.

Last day I had to see Cape Point, which is where the Atlantic ocean and the Indian Ocean meet. I got some great pictures from there and we hiked to the lighthouse there for the unreal view. I got a great nicks roast beef bumper sticker picture there, along with Anthony’s teddy bear.

The night life in Cape Town was awesome. There was a club on the top of one of their tall business buildings with a great view, it was called Hemisphere. There was entire streets with bars and clubs so all of the students were there every night, making mornings really tough haha! But you gotta do it, cant waste a minute on this trip, plus having fun at night/bonding with the other kids is just as important as the day trips, Remember that Mom! Haha

Alright well 3 days I think until Mauritus, I also have my first test tomorrow in Global Studies. Every time I am in port I forget about school, then it hits you like a ton of bricks when you get back on the boat haha. Life is tough…..pause……nahhht

Peace and Love

Neptune Day....yeah it exists

We passed the equator the other day. In celebration of our achievement we had “Neptune Day”. This was a day where all of the students got initiated into the ship life basically, I guess this is because crossing the equator is a big deal haha. So our initiation was so get this green goo dumped on our heads, it kind of reminded me of Nickelodeon slime, then we had to kiss a dead fish, then we had to kiss the captain of the ships ring and jump into the pool. The Captain was dressed like Poseidon, he was all in green paint and a hoolah type skirt thing, it was hilarious.

But the best part of the day was that classes were cancelled haha. They also had a BBQ for all of the students along with dance music. It was sick. I honestly feel like I am taking a semester off from school, which sounds bad, but true haha. This trip is the best trip offered in the world. Show me one better, please feel free to look. Basically I spent the day laying out by the pool and playing volleyball all day long in the beautiful equator sun.

Namibia in a few days, I am pretty sure we are going to be taking that country over. The town where everyone is renting houses averages 2.5 people per every 7 miles. We are going to triple that easily. Basically the entire boat is heading to this beach town and renting beachside houses and all of the bars are walking distance. We also have planned sand-boarding, 4-wheeling in the sand dunes, and maybe camel riding if I have time. Topping it all off with seeing flamingos and an oyster farm on the last day for class. Tough life I know haha

A new blog post and pictures will be up shortly after Namibia or South Africa.

Keeping it real always

On Ze Boat

Currently in the Atlantic Ocean, on the way to Namibia. The boat life is interesting to say the least. Class takes place for about 2 hours at most a day, life is good. The rest of the day is spent drinking fruit coolatas and relaxin on the deck in the sun.Life is so hard on this boat haha.

I have started playing so much soccer on the boat to keep the skillllzzzz fresh haha. We have a solid group that plays 3v3 on the basketball court and yes I brag about my bros and our NCAA tournament status haha...I gotta do it.

Pub night is basically what everyone looks forward to, we have it every night at sea. Its a good place to meet people and have a few brewskis. We are allowed 2 drinks beer or wine at dinner, then 4 at pub night.Everyone gets a little loose and converses. We all know everyone comes out of the shell with a few drinks in them. However, I have yet to get all 6 drinks in one night. I feel like I can chat without it, totally different than real college life. I guess the boat is instilling social drinking and its really starting to work on everyone. I personally love it. I feel more mature and grown up I guess, its weird.

What can I say about the people on this boat. My friends that I have made are amazing, its like we have known each other for years. ITs funny how people with the same interests come together so easily. I have frequent talks about stocks, investing, the real estate market and much more. I have learned more talking to my buddies than I have in all my years in school. My buddy Jack is a stock genius...to put it into perspective he read an entire book just on Options. I have learned a bunch from him because he knows how to explain it to a 20 year old kid because he is one too. Its great.

To my family reading this, send your kids on this trip. They will grow in ways that you cant teach them. I have learned so much already and its just starting. I have seen kids beg in the streets, it really puts your life into perspective. The classroom is such a small part of life here its refreshing. Its not about the grades you get, but what you get from the ports we stop in. I have learned to learn every day, and that is the most important thing.

Peace and Love

Next stop Namibia, gonna do a safari. Ill will post again once it gets closer.

Excellenttttttt

Morocco Flavaaaaa

Worddddd uppppppp - first thing, Its hard for me to put up my pictures directly to my blog, but if you give me your email I can invite you to see my albums through my gmail account so easy. dtzortzis@gmail.com so get at me

Back from Morocco what a place! Not what I expected at all, so much more life in Africa than I thought. Stayed in Merekesh for the majority of the time with 3 other great people, Jack, Kirstin, and Meghan. We hit up the open market the first day, the most wild place I have ever been. Snake charmers, monkeys, singers, dancers...anything that could be done to make a dollar they were doing and they totally wanted your dollar haha. It was like they say dollar signs when we rolled in, they just wanted our cash. At first we kinda got taken for some, but we smartened up and gave them that good ol American attitude haha.

We stayed at this placed called a Riad. It is like a converted house to a bed and breakfast. We were actually the only people in there so we got all the service. The place was a sickkkkk, I should be puttin the pics up soon. At night we had dinner overlooking the market, it had a Greek Festival feel, but with small shops were bartering was the name of the game. I got another soccer jersey for 100 durma, which is like 10 us dollaaaaas. They also had sick Nikes for like 20 us dollars, def bootleg but sick non-the-less. At night we hit up the bar scene and did the whole local thing.

Special note for Rosie right here - We went to a hookah bar son, I took mad pics for you, you would have loved it. During our hookah sesh belly dancers came out to intense techno music and danced all around our table. So sick, I was stuffin 20's into the panties...no big deal haha. It was your place man for sure.

Phil Ive been to two countries and still havent seen one person that parties anywhere close to as hard as you do haha. I think you have a world record, Id be a good judge to that. And your jokes work out here too haha

So Morocco, Great place and I think I would want to go back to see more, I would recommend it for a good off the grid trip, but you have to have wits of steal or you will get worked for every penny you own.

Jammin out to the Drought 3 right now, Justin Knowles whats up, read your 25 thoughts thing, miss you too buddy

Out in the middle of the Atlantic....

Hellooooo everyone

I am currently out in the middle of the ocean on my way to Spain. The water is a lot more blue than I thought it would be and the ocean is a lot larger than I thought also. I have met so many great/fun/interesting people so far on my trip. It is unreal meeting people and hearing where they are from and realizing that there is life outside of good old Mass haha. I def miss Framingham State and all my broosifs at school, but this trip is unreal and I would much rather be here than the frozen ice-land back home haha.

I haven’t taken any pics yet because I actually haven’t seen land in two days, but I did see a 35ft fishing boat like 800 miles out, which was weird. But I will upload some as soon as I take them.

Laterrr landgoes

SAS countdown - 1 week

Semester at Sea is right around the corner. In one week I will be straight chillen in the bahamas enjoying the sun, then that following Monday the MVexplorer will depart from the Bahamas on the way to Barcelona. It seems totally wild that this is getting so close.

Talk to you then

I posted this through my email, so lets see how this works out
